A downstairs unit
If you have a small dog, then you may do better with an upstairs unit if your dog is trained to relieve themselves on pads or doesn't need to relieve themselves often. However, in most cases, you should think about looking for a downstairs unit because it will make it easier for you to take your dog out to relieve themselves many times throughout the day.
A unit with a yard area
Another thing you should look for is a one-bedroom apartment that has a small yard area. This can make it even easier on you because you can simply let your dog go out in the little yard every time that it has to relieve itself. Also, your dog may like to spend time out in the yard to enjoy the sunlight, as many dogs like to lie out in the sun on the grass.
An apartment with a dog area
Some apartments that are dog-friendly will also have some type of dog area. Some will offer a large gated dog run, and some will even have small dog parks. Then, there are those that have walking trails you can walk your dog on that will have stations that contain doggy bags and trash cans, so you can pick up after your dog if it relieves itself while you are on the walking trail with it.

It can be easier to find an apartment that accepts small dogs or dogs that are thought to be friendlier breeds.
